Trappist Achel "De 3 Wijzen". Two extremely rare and most
beautiful bottles. Be aware, those two different bottles couldn't be
purchased at the fest. No, this is a nice surprise from Loek (from Holland)
who brought these two bottles to show me, and to allow me to take some
very exclusive pictures.
|

The bottle on the left mentioned 10 vol%
!! The one on the right 9.5 vol%. Collectors items without any doubt.
Note that this beer is now available whole year round as Achel Extra
9.5 vol% 75cl. bottled. This year no Trappist X-mas beers at the fest.

Warren Becker and Bill Coleman, two beergeeks from USA (New-York)
brought some delicacies to taste. A big bottle of Dogfish Head "Burton
Baton". Website
Dogfish Head brewery.
A beer to be first brewed for Michael
Jackson's Rare Beer Club for shipping in October 2004,
then release to the distributors in January 2005.
|

This very special beer finds its heritage between the Burton
Ales of England and a very special Burton Ale that was brewed by the
Ballantine brewery between the wars. Ballantines version was so
special that it was never offered for sale but was rationed to key customers,
dignitaries and friends of the brewery. The beer was aged and blended
for over a year in wooden vats with a ridiculous amount of hops. A beer
so rare it was never offered for sale but remains a holy grail of the
American brewing tradition.
|

At this point I wanted to make a picture with flash light. At the
moment I pushed the button, someone took the bottle away. This resulted
in a picture sadly 'without' bottle. The next picture was a successful
retry !
|

Burton Baton is brewed with Warrior and Glacier hops and blended
on 2 strains of ale yeast, one American, one English. The beer is then
aged on barrel staves of French oak for four months before being blended
50/50 with our 90 Minute Imperial IPA (90 IBU, 9%ABV). Post blend, this
beer is 80 IBU and 10% ABV.
The art-work for the bottle also has an England-meets-America pedigree.
The label features a painting of a cowboy by artist Jon Langford. Jon
is the lead singer of the Mekons (the seminal English punk band) who
now lives/paints/sings in Chicago. He was named the Village Voice Artist
of the Year for 2003.
Release date: January 2005
*except for Rare Beer Club members who will get the beer in late 2004
Thanks Bill and Warren !

The fest smoothly went on.............
|

Time for the impressive X-mas beer line-up
|

All bottles were nicely put side by side with corresponding numbers.
|

I advice you to open the "Complete
Beerlist" in order to observe the bottle size/shape and how
the label looks alike.
|

The 10 exclusive X-mas beers - with corresponding tokens (bonnen)
- were listed somewhere on top of the bottles.
|

This is the beginning of the impressive beer collection on the left
side. Note that it was an extremely difficult job to take those pictures
without wanting the staff in front of the bottles. The staff moving
quickly from side to side. Waiting for the exact moment to shoot was
extremely difficult.
|

A nice back-shot. This is the back of Gunter Mertens, one of the
organizers of the fest. Every staff-member could easily be recognized
with the white Essen X-mas beerfest T-shirt.
|

Many thanks to the satff for all the precious "free" work.
|

Somewhere in the middle
|

More to the left side.
|

An overall view. Note that all the beers were also listed on a huge
white paper hanging on the wall. If a beer was sold out, the name was
crossed out. So, it was fairly easy to see if any beers were already
sold out at the moment when ordering.
|

Unnecessary to mention the beer list was huge ! This pictures speaks
for itself.
|

Look and admire.......
|

124 X-mas beers in total, a true RECORD. Never seen before.
|

No doubt this is one of the best X-mas beer festivals worldwide.
|

Some left-overs.
This means this is the end of the picture report folks.
Many, many thanks to all of the contributors, attendees, the staff,
OBER, etc....
Without any doubts an unforgettable experience folks.
I'll be there next year !!
CHEERS !
